Helmut Schmidinger started his musical education taking piano lessons under Gertrud Jetschgo at the "Landesmusikschule" Wels (1982-1987) and afterwards studied piano under Heinz Walter (1987-90) and oboe under Arthur Jensen (1988-91) at the Salzburg Mozarteum University. In Salzburg he also studied composition (1990-94) with Gerhard Wimberger, Hans-Jürgen von Bose and Gerd Kühr. He attended master classes given by Friedrich Cerha and Ernst Helmuth Flammer, and studied computerized music and live electronics under Dexter Morill.
He is co-founder of the series of concerts "MUSICA EX TEMPORE", which focuses on contemporary music, and is co-organizer of the series "TREFFPUNKT NEUE MUSIK" (Concourse of New Music) of the Upper Austrian TV and Radio Network (ORF). Between 1997 and 2005, Schmidinger was member of the Music Committee of the Upper Austrian Cultural Advisory Board. Since January 2002 he has represented Upper Austria in the Association of Austrian Composers. Komponistenbund. He is the initiator of the composition competition for children and adolescents called „KlangLandschaften“ (Sound Land-scapes) and the nationwide concerts known as „KlangFluss“ (Flow of Sounds). Schmidinger has been artistic director of the Wels Subscription Concert Series since the 2003/2004 season; and starting with the 2005/2006 season, has been director of the Wels office of "Jeunesse".
