Stefan Metz was born in Transsilvania. He studied cello at the Academy of Bukarest and later with Paul Tortellier. A course for string quartetts brought him to the Netherlands, where he foundet the Orlando Quartet in 1976.
Since 1982, Metz organises the chamber music festival »Orlando Festival«. He gave commissions to Alfred Schnittke, Ysang Yun, András Szöllösy, Marius Constant, Henk Badings, Marius Flothuis, Ton de Leeuw, Tristan Keuris und Marijn Simons, whose string quartets had their premiere during the festival.
György Kurtágs many contributions to the Orlando Festival lead to a special relationship between him and Stefan Metz, who premièred many of Kurtágs works during various international festivals.
Stefan Metz gives master classes in the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, France and the United States and was member of the jury at various international string quartet competitions. Furthermore he is organiser and director/main docent at the Dutch String Quartet Academy in Amsterdam, an academy, from which a new generation of Dutch string quartets arose.
